THE Y FOR
We focus our work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier, and supporting our neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.
Palomar YMCA Swim Team Coaching staff
The PALY Penguin swim program has a wonderful group of coaches that are qualified to coach swimmers of all abilities. Whether your swimmer is a beginner or hoping to achieve recognition at the national level, our coaches can help them improve!
John McGlynn - Head Coach
John has been coaching in our program for almost a decade and has taken a small program that he inherited and grown it to over 100 swimmers. He has coached swimmers that have excelled at various levels of competition - Junior Olympic champions, Western Zones qualifiers (and champions), CIF champions, and hopefully in 2012 the first San Diego representatives at Y Nationals. He has been selected as a member of the San Diego Zones coaching staff 4 times and as a coach for the All Star team three times. He also serves as the varsity swim coach for Escondido Charter HS, which competes in the Valley League.
John and his coaching staff provide an opportunity for young children to learn about the sport of swimming in a fun and challenging environment. Beginner swimmers are taught the basic FUN-damentals of all strokes, with an emphasis on kicking, drills, and technique. Once they meet the requirements for this level, they move into the advanced group - where they are introduced to endurance and competitive training, and dryland exercises.
In 2011, the PALY swim team earned its first top-10 finish at Junior Olympics. The team also placed second in the San Diego YMCA league. Some goals that we will have for our 2011-2012 season include:
- Top 8 finish at Junior Olympics
- Qualify 20 swimmers to compete at Junior Olympics
- Win the San Diego YMCA team championship
- Average 100+ swimmers for the entire swim season
Joseph B - Assistant Coach
Joseph is currently a student at Palomar College, where he will compete on the school's swim team this year. A former swimmer in the PALY program, he has developed a great rapport with the swimmers in the advanced group. He has even competed in several races with his swimmers. Joseph also started the high school swim program at Classical Academy in 2011. When not coaching or practicing swim, Joseph pursues his other passion - soccer, especially if it relates to the Italian Serie A League or national team.
Lauren B - Assistant Coach
Lauren started swimming competitively around the age of 8 and since then has learned much about swimming and coaching. Some of her favorite events are the 500 Freestyle, the 200 IM and the 100 Butterfly. Swimming does best with obsession and passion; once you’ve competed in one event you don’t ever want to quit. A pool has never been far from her, and now that she have this opportunity to coach she wants to teach others about this amazing sport and give them the opportunity to compete and have fun at the same time!
Elizabeth R - Assistant Coach
Elizabeth has been lifeguarding, coaching, and teaching swim lessons at the Palomar Family YMCA for 3 years. She swam competitively on a USA swim team, beginning in middle school, and also competed for the Ramona High School varsity water polo and swim teams. In 2007, she started coaching water polo for her alma mater while attend Cal State San Marcos, where she majors in Kinesiology.
Aszurae V - Assistant Coach
Aszurae is a 2010 graduate of Valley Center High School, where she competed for their swim and water polo teams. She is currently in her second year at Grossmont College, where she has continued both her polo and swim careers. Aszurae has a wonderful demeanor when working with our novice program and also challenges our advanced swimmers with set that she has swum at her college practices.
